* * * * * HOW TO SETUP THE PROGRAM * * * *
Prior to using NetSnoop you will need to enter
some basic information about your software.
Starting with the location of the Netscape
program. But first open the SETUP window as
follows:
1) From the main menu select "File"
2) Select the sub-menu item "SETUP"
A window will appear that will have four
blank input boxes. In the first you need to
place the path to the Netscape program
directory. If you know the exact path you
can just type it in. If you need to find the
exact location you can press the "?" button
and use the Drive and Directory tools to
locate it.
The final path should look something like:
C:\NETSCAPE or C:\INTERNET\NETSCAPE
If you use the "?" button to locate the
directory a check will be performed to
verify you have the proper location. If
NetSnoop indicates the wrong directory,
try again. Also, as you accept your
new setup the Netscape path will be
verified again. If the path is correct,
you will proceed to other portions of the
program. If it's wrong, you will be
prompted.
Repeat this for the Netscape CACHE directory.
The next item needed is the Graphics
Viewing Program that you want to use. A
good program for this is LVIEW31.EXE which
can be down loaded from the Web. Chances
are good you received a copy of this program
with your internet software package.
However, any graphics viewing program
will work. It must be able to view
files with the .GIF and .JPG extensions.
Again, use the "?" button to locate your
Graphics Viewing Program. For this
entry you will not only want the
directory where the program is located but
also the program name. The final entry
might look something like:
C:\INTERNET\LVIEW31.EXE
LVIEW31 can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.cica.indiana.edu
/pub/pc/win3/desktop
The last item needed is your Text Viewing
Program. This can be any program that
will let you view and/or edit an ASCII
text file. Some that will work are:
NOTEPAD.EXE
WINWORD.EXE
WRITE.EXE
These are all Windows based programs
that will allow you to view the text
files. An example of this entry is:
C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE
An alternative to using an external
viewer is to use the Text Viewer built
into NetSnoop. To use the internal
viewer enter INT. in to the last
line or leave it blank and NetSnoop
will fill it in for you.
When you are finished entering your
path and program information, select the
OK button to return to the main program
screen.
* * * * HOW TO OPERATE THE PROGRAM * * * *
The main screen of NetSnoop has a view window
with a list of file names and several buttons
allowing you to perform various tasks. The
button functions are as follows:
VIEW - The View button will allow you to see
the file that is currently highlighted
in the list window. If it is a
graphics file with and extension of
.GIF or .JPG then the Graphics Viewing
Program will be used. If it is an
HTML or XBM file the Text Viewing
Program will be used.
KEEP - The Keep button will be active after a
file has been selected for viewing.
If you select the Keep button you
will have the opportunity to save the
file you have just viewed to any drive
you wish using the standard File Save
Dialog Box.
COPY - The Copy button will allow you to
make a copy of the currently
highlighted file to any drive before
you view it. If you know for sure
you want the file you need not view
it first.
NOTE: THERE ARE ENDLESS VARIATIONS OF FILE
NAMES ON THE INTERNET. NetSnoop WILL
RECOGNIZE THE MOST POPULAR ONES. IF
YOU FEEL A FILE NAME OR EXTENSION HAS
BEEN SELECTED IMPORPERLY, THEN USE THE
COPY BUTTON TO MAKE A NEW COPY, WITH A
DIFFERENT FILE NAME. YOUR NEW FILE
CAN BE VIEWED OR MODIFIED OUTSIDE OF
NetSnoop.
INFORMATION - The Information button will
give you detailed information about
the currently highlighted file.
You will see the File Name, File
Type, File Size, Date And Time it
was placed on your system and the
URL or Internet Address. At the
bottom of the screen you will see
the total number of files currently
in the list.
CLIPBOARD - The TO CLIPBOARD
button will place the URL that is
shown in the URL window into the
Windows System Clipboard. You can
then go into Netscape and PASTE
the URL into the current address
line just below the menu buttons.
Pressing the Enter or Return key
will tell Netscape to go and get
the file associated with this URL.
You can also paste the address into
an E-mail message and send it off
to a friend for them to view.
DISCARD - The Discard button will appear
after you have selected a file
to be viewed. NetSnoop only works
with copies of the original files
that Netscape has stored on your
hard drive. When you select the
Discard button you are only
removing a copy of the original.
You can come back at anytime and
make a new copy of the file
to view or work with.
NOTE: THE ORIGINAL NETSCAPE FILES ARE
NEVER REMOVED FROM YOUR SYSTEM.
ONLY COPIES OF THE ORIGINALS
ARE USED BY NetSnoop.
FILTER Buttons:
The bottom row of buttons are the File
List FILTER buttons. You can select the
Picture button if you wish to view only
the picture or graphic type files in the
list. The HTML button will in turn
show only the .HTM or .HTML files.
The Refresh button will return you to the
original list of all file types.
SEARCHING:
SEARCH functions are available from the
top menu bar. When you select "Search"
you will see a new window appear.
You need only to type in the text you
wish to find and press the Search
button. The search will always start
from the top of the file list.
To locate the next occurrence of the
text press the "Again" button. It will
continue down the list until the
last occurrence of the text is found.
PRINTER SETUP:
From the "File" menu item you can also
select the "Printer Setup." This is the
standard Windows dialog box for printer
configuration.
CHANGE CACHE SETTING:
Another selection under the "File" menu
is the "Change Cache" option. This will
allow you to change the Disk Cache
setting in the Netscape program. The
changes made will take affect the next
time you start Netscape.
TYPICAL DATA LINE:
A typical line of information in the file
list window could be:
M0OABOCC.MOZ = main.gif [1476] *
-or-
M0OABOCC.gif = main.gif [1476] *
The [1476] indicates the file size in
bytes.
If the file size is followed by an
asterisk "*" then the file extension
and the file type do not match. Pressing
the Information button will allow you to
determine the differences.
Sometimes a file will not have a given
name. Each time a No Name file is
found it will be given the name
"NONAMEx" where x = a sequential number
starting with 1. Therefore the first
time a No Name file is found it will
be seen on the File List as NONAME1.___
with the proper file extension.
WHEN RUNNING NETSCAPE:
There are a couple of things to keep in
mind while running Netscape. What you are
viewing at any one time, might not be
stored on disk yet. The contents of the
Memory Cache should be placed on disk in
the Disk Cache when you exit Netscape.
If you see an item through Netscape
that you would like to view with NetSnoop,
then move to another Web Page with
Netscape before you exit. Sometimes the
items on the last Web page viewed will not
be included in the cache system. This
process seems to change with each new
release of Netscape. But either way,
NetSnoop will show you what you have in
your cache files.
When you start up NetSnoop after a Netscape
session, the newer items you have viewed will
be located at the top of NetSnoop list if you
are running a version of Netscape before
version 2.00. Version 2.00 and later will
not place the files in any particular order.
If you do not see the file you wanted, start
Netscape again and revisit the page, then
move to one more Web page before exiting
Netscape.
